My previous post was about an elderly German Shepherd I rescued from the pound and nursed back to health. This post is about two angels in the form of two sweet little girls, who suggested to their parents that this dog be named Stella and that she should “come home and live with us as she is such a gentle appreciative soul”.

Stella was old and left unclaimed at the pound with a serious illness, the chance for being adopted was slim, she would be overlooked and sad to say, she would have been put to sleep. With your support and donations, I was able to take her in, the rest I left to fate. Within a month, she has a wonderful new home and is much loved and doted on by two little girls.

“Because they exist they have value and deserve to be here.”

I am always feeding

Posted in Haven Blog tagged , , , , at 5:45 pm by havenoftheheart

Recently my brother from out-of-town paid me a visit at the sanctuary. As we walked around happily chatting and catching up, I was subconsciously doing chores with my hands such as stacking dishes, folding blankets, moving cases of pet food, brushing burrs off some raggedy waif, giving out treats and giving out more treats… my list of subconscious tasks is endless.  It took my brother just one visit to point it out, so much so that he wrote a teasing comment on the Haven’s Facebook page: “She is always feeding!”

As you might know, I love my waifs and I spoil them. Many have experienced hunger and neglect and I believe that they were sent to me for a reason, I am to pamper them and that they will never be hungry again under my care. Very Scarlett O’Hara dramatic, don’t you think?

On a daily basis, the Haven’s waifs consume 40 bales of hay, 75 kg of grains, 48 tubs of Whiskas, 24 cans of Fancy Feast, 10 kg of dry cat food and 25 kg of dog food, plus cooked food from the kitchen, no wonder I am always feeding, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

With some many mouths to feed, we rely on the generosity of animal lovers for support, whether through donationadoption or fund-raising events, we are very thankful for your thoughtfulness and compassion.

Excuse me, I have to go do my feeding now…

A while back, I had dropped in at the vet quite serendipitously to pay a bill. While waiting at reception, in walked a chap with this beautiful 15 yr old lab boxer mix. The dog hurried towards me all licks and wags and I commented on his great condition.  The owner and the dog walked into the examination room.  A few minutes later while I was still waiting, I overheard the vet speak of euthanasia.  I was shocked to think that this lively sweetie should meet an untimely death, later to find out that the dog could no longer hold his urine while the owner was away at work and euthanasia was to be the solution.

I asked the vet if she thought the owner would consider allowing me to take the dog home.  A few seconds later an elated owner with happy dog emerged from the room thanking me profusely for helping out.  I shouldn’t even have been at the vet that day but I think fate guided me to a dog who had a very strong desire to remain alive.

Gizmo is an easy dog to care for.  He loves his food, his walks and gets on well with both dogs and cats. I let him out several times throughout the day and have had no accidents.  He would make a fine companion dog for a senior, who enjoyed long walks.

If you are reading this, then perhaps Gizmo is your serendipity too.

Hector 2005 – 2015

Posted in Haven Blog tagged , , , at 1:33 pm by havenoftheheart

“Softly he left my embrace and walked across the room. Without making a sound, he lowered his body ever so gently onto the doggy bed.  There he drifted away with grace and nobility into a greater realm.”

This was truly what happened when Hector left me, as if an angel had descended upon him and led him away. Strangely, instead of grief, I felt peace… and pride. Yes, I am proud of my handsome Hector, for being majestic, brave and dignified.

Hector was adopted out as a puppy 10 years ago, but sadly, he was returned to the Haven when his owner passed away.  Hector, who lived in a country property all his life with his elderly owner, was rather shy and did not easily interact with strangers or other animals.

Dogs are resilient creatures. They bear heartaches, abuse and neglect but always seem to get through hardship with unbridled optimism and high spirit, given that we provide them with love, care, support and plenty of treats.  Hector was a fine example. Through playtime with both human and other dogs, he slowly gained confidence and trust.

In late November, Hector was rushed to the hospital for surgery after discovering that there was a tumour in his spleen and it had ruptured.  Surgery went extremely well and it was a joy for me to see that he recovered quickly and mightily to his own noble self.  Alas, all good things must come to an end, even with his spleen incised, the cancer had metastasized and his prognosis was poor.  On December 8, three weeks after his surgery, Hector passed away with grace and nobility.

He will always be in my heart.

Haven’s Bed-In to Give Pees A Chance

Posted in Haven Blog tagged , , , , , , at 12:16 pm by havenoftheheart

We recently received a delivery of some very XXL doggy beds that used to belong to a Great Dane named Maggie. Sadly Maggie passed away and her owner generously donated her belongings to be enjoyed by our Haven’s waifs. These beds are humongus, clean and in great conditions, they are something we definitely can use at the Haven.

When the beds arrived, our waifs were so excited that they couldn’t wait to jump into them. Here is little bossy Manni declaring his squatter’s rights before the big dogs got a chance.

We are grateful for the donation and may the spirit of Maggie run free over the rainbow bridge.

All we are saying, is give pees a chance!

All we are saying, is give pees a chance!

All stacked up for now

All stacked up for now

Hey we are going to get new beds!

Hey, there is a Bed-In. Love and Pees!
